The Day of the Lady of Altagracia (high grace) – National Dominican holiday 2021
The Day of the Lady of Altagracia (high grace) is a national Dominican holiday celebrated on January 21. It is one of two national holidays dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Our Lady of Altagracia is a portrait of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is the Patron Saint of the Dominican Republic and more than 800,000 visit the Basilica of La Altagracia in Higuey to see the image of Our Lady of Altagracia each year.
This festival was originally held on August 15th (Assumption of Mary) but was moved to January 21st to celebrate a victory over the French in 1690. The other national holiday dedicated to the Virgin Mary is Our Lady of Mercedes Day on September 24.
